As it was when I bought it used, my tractor's wheels seem to be set for the widest position-there is one hole visible inboard of the wheel hub.
My understanding is that you set it wide for sideways stability on unlevel ground. Are there any other reasons? My land is virtually flat and with a narrower setting, I might just be able to get the tractor into my existing shed and put my truck back in the garage where it belongs.

That's my understanding as well. However, going into holes, hitting bumps, working on piles or heavy loaders up high can create stability problems even on level land.

If the shed is that narrow for the tractor a lot of care would be taken going in and out I guess. Loaders and implements swing outside the tire tracks and surprisingly little turning can mash something to the side. I still get near misses sometimes. ....

It does sound like you have an adjustment available. Some rims and tire combinations have no adjustments. ....
